Haunted Evening Historical Drama – Haunted Evening Historical Drama includes spirits from the past, southern funeral customs, life in New Bern after the Civil War, recent paranormal activity and investigations. Experience the mystery and shadows of the Attmore-Oliver House by candlelight. Performances begin at 7:30pm and 8:30pm. Tickets are $12 in advance and $14 at the performance. 2 Jarman Opry Theater Enjoy a classic country, gospel, blue grass show at the Masonic Theatre in Historic Downtown New Bern. Show is from 7 - 9 pm. Come relax along the Trent River at the Sheraton New Bern Hotel and enjoy live jazz music free of charge from some of New Bern’s finest artists! 8 Music in the Park Southern Breeze Band – Pack a picnic, grab a blanket or lawn chair and join us at Union Point Park for the annual “Music in the Park” series. Enjoy the Southern Breeze Band playing Southern rock and country from 6-8pm. This series is proudly brought to you by New Bern Parks & Recreation. 15, 22 Spirited Through Time Historical Drama
Spirited Through Time Historical Drama brings patrons in contact with spirits of the Olivers, a prominent New Bern family of the 1800’s, who share their stories. Travel over a century into the past guided by spirits. What tales do these visions bring forth? What energy is still present here? Visit Spirited Through Time and find out. The New Bern Academy Museum - Exhibits feature early New Bern history, examples of local architecture, Civil War memorabilia and 18th century education.  Hours are:  winter - 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM and summer - 1:PM to 5:00 PM.  Group rservations can be made by calling 252-514-4900 or 800-767-1560.  Individual tickets are available or the Academy is included in the two day Governor's pass for Tyon Palace HIstoric Sites and Gardens.  Admission is always free to members of the Council of Friends.

Bank of the Arts; Craven Arts Council & Gallery - Exhibitions change monthly.  Check in at 317 Middle Street or www.cravenarts.org for many arts-related activities throughout the area.

The Newcomer's Club of New Bern holds its meetings at H. J. MacDonald Middle School, 3127 Elizabeth Avenue the second Tuesday of each month.  Social starts at 7:15 with the meeting beginning at 7:30 pm.  Come see what's happening in and around New Bern.

Fresh Lobster flown in from Maine for Pollock Street Deli every Friday night.

Public Radio East has new programming on Friday nights - tune in to the Friday Night Fish Fry from 9 pm to midnight on 88.5. This program showcases some of the most talented musicians in the world, who, for reasons of commercial appeal, aren't heard on the many stateions that claim to play country or alternative music.  At 4 pm on Saturdays tune in for Fantasy Fables - musical stories for young listeners. 

New Bern Recreation Department is sponsoring an exciting program for painters called Paint With Us Program.  Interested participants can bring an easel, paint and brushes and paint with other artists every Monday and Thursday from 9:00 AM to noon.  For more information call 636-4061.

GOLF AND TENNIS

The Emerald Golf and Social Club located at 5000 Clubhouse Drive, New Bern (252)633-4440 is a 7,000 yard course providing challenge for all skill levels.  Most holes feature 4 or 5 pin locations.  'The Emerald' is a PGA Tour Qualifying course and was given 3-1/2 stars in the Golf Digest Places to Play 1994-95.

There are four hard-tru tennis courts.  Members gather Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday for mixed doubles.  Women's doubles are Monday morning and men's doubles are Thursday.

The L-shaped Olympic sized pool is open from May through September.  Activities include water aerobics and children's swim teams and the pool can be rented for special events.

Fairfield Harbour has 2 courses, both located at 1100 Pelican Drive, New Bern (252) 514-0050.  The Harbour Pointe course offers 18 holes of Bentgrass fairways and greens with the front 9 and driving range designed by Rees Jones.  The key to lower scores is the short game.  The Shoreline Course features Bermuda Grass greens and fairways and is called 'The Great Imposter'.   Accuracy is the key to survival on this challenging course.  Fairfield Harbor also has tennis courts available.

River Bend Country Club is a semi-private course located at 94 Shoreline Drive, New Bern (252) 638-2819.  This course located in the River Bend community features Tif Eagle greens and Bermuda fairways, the areas only lighted driving range and a new clubhouse in 2003.  Tennis fans can also enjoy two courts at River Bend.

Taberna Country Club is a private club located at 401 Taberna Way, New Bern, within the 1st class Weyerhaeuser community.  This course was designed by the Jack Nicklaus design team and features Bent Grass greens and Bermuda fairways.

New Bern Golf and Country Club is a private club located at 4301 Country Club Road, New Bern (252) 637-2413.  This 18 hole course features small Bent Grass greens and Bermuda Grass fairways.  It is a short course in great shape.  There is a waiting list to join this prestigious club.  PGA certified Golf Pro, Tennis Pro, swimming pool, fitness center and exclusive dining are all available at New Bern Golf and Country Club.

Harbour Town Racquet Club, located on Marina Road in the River Bend area of New Bern (252) 636-5652 is a private tennis club featuring 6 Har Tru courts, 4 lighted courts for night play and a fully equipped clubhouse with showers and kitchen.  For more information www.newberntennis.com

Tennis players will also find courts available at Craven Community College as well as several schools and parks in the area.

For some trip information....

Birthplace of Pepsi- 256 Middle St., New Bern (252)636-5898. On this spot in his pharmacy Caleb Bradham invented  Brad's Drink, which he later patented as Pepsi-Cola. Today, you can relax and enjoy a Pepsi-Cola at the recreated soda fountain and purchase a souvenir.

New Bern Trolley Tours-333 Middle St., New Bern (252)637-7316. Discover three centuries of history and architectural beauty in a 90-minute trolley car tour of historic New Bern. Professional guides will recount the fascinating details of this former royal capital of North Carolina.

New Bern Academy Museum-Corner of New and Hancock streets, New Bern (252)514-4951. The New Bern Academy Museum building was a school house for boys and girls, then served as a hospital in the Civil War. In 1881 it became part of the New Bern Graded School System. Today there are four exhibits: Early New Bern History, Historic Architecture of New Bern, Civil War and History of Education in New Bern.

Cape Lookout National Seashore and Lighthouse-131 Charles St., Harkers Island (252)728-2250. Completed in 1812, the Cape Lookout lighthouse was reconstructed in 1859 to its height of 163 feet. Today, the lighthouse is still an acting aid to navigation with a distintive black and white diamond pattern. Activities include fishing, swimming, birding, boating, wind-surfing, kayaking and shelling.

USMC Aviation Exhibit-1 Governmental Ave., Havelock (252)444-6400. The USMC Aviation Exhibit features the history of Marine Corps aviation. Restored aircraft, scaled models, historic photographs and artifacts are on display. The adjoining Havelock Tourist Center Complex includes a waterfront park along Slocum Creek featuring a nature boardwalk and boat ramp.

Fort Macon and Fort Macon State Park Atlantic Beach-E. Fort Macon Road, Atlantic Beach (252) 726-3775. Built between 1826 and 1834 to guard the entrance to Beaufort Harbour, this five sided fort constructed of brick and stone was intermittently seized by Confederate troops in 1861 at the outbreak of the Civil War. Today Fort Macon is one of the finest surviving examples of 19th century military architecture and fortification.

Kinston Drag Strip-2869 Hull Road, Kinston (252)522-9551. The Kinston Drag Strip was originally built as a quarter-mile drag strip in 1960. KDS is home to legendary motor sports names like Richard Petty, Don Nicholson, Hubert Platt, Ronnie Sox and Scotty Cannon. Several world records have been set at KDS as well.

Lake Mattammuskeet-38 Mattamuskeet Road, Swan Quarter (252)926-9171. Located on Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge, this Hyde County lake is North Carolina's largest natural lake. It averages only two feet in depth, but it is 18 miles wide, containing about 40,000 acres.

Aurora Fossil Museum-400 Main St., Aurora (252)322-4238. Discover prehistoric man, ocean life fifteen million or more years ago and geological formations. The museum boasts a large collection of fossils from the nearby PCS Phosphate mine and allows visitors to see fossilized bones, teeth, shells and coral.

30 Acres and a Mule Farm-125 McGowan Rd., Jacksonville (910)324-4499. This destination features horses, ponies, family trail rides,  hayrides, picnic area with grills, play area, petting zoo, stable tour, a clown, feild trips and a setting for outdoor weddings.

North Carolina Estuarium-223 E. Water St., Washington (252)948-0000. Explore science, art, nature and history where the rivers meet the sea at the Pamlico/Tar River estuary. Seasonal river tours are available and groups are welcome.

Lynnwood Park Zoo-1071 Wells Rd., Jacksonville (910)938-5848. The 10- acre park is home to 50 animals, including mammals, birds and reptiles. Visitors enjoy a leisurely stroll on walkways that weave between exhibits. Ample rest stops are provided along the way.
